Responsibility For Change

As creators of technology, we are accountable for how our work affects society. Exactly how our creations are used is out of our control, but we provide the means of great change. Every member of society, even indirect consumers and future generations, is affected by technology of many varieties. We will soon use our knowledge and resources to contribute to this technology. Because our efforts go beyond simply earning income, the outcome of our work is as important to consider as a potential employer or project. We are unable to predict all resulting scenarios, and some creations will have but a minor effect on society. However, in supporting forms of technology we believe can on the whole benefit the world, we will take pride in our work and contributions.

  1. I like that you made a personal tie-in for both yourself and your readers by referencing the technologies that we will contribute as a part of our jobs. I feel like most programmers in the workforce focus just on the money they can make or the "cool" factor of the work they are creating.

  2. Reading your comments reminded me of the story of Alfred Nobel. His invention of dynamite started to be used as a devastating weapon. Instead of letting himself be known as the "merchant of death" for the rest of his life, he focused on what he believed was right and created the Nobel Prize to recognize the greatest contributions to mankind! If we follow his example and focus on what we believe will benefit the world, I know we can find a way to be a positive influence.

  3. Most of the time we don't fully understand the ends of our efforts. Good thing we are not the ultimate judges of our works. We can do great things wherever we are put.
